Yaşar Arslan, the President of the Natural Gas Distributors Association of Turkey (GAZBİR), participated in the 'Year in Pictures' voting organized by the Anadolu Agency (AA).
Arslan examined the photographs taken by AA correspondents and photojournalists both domestically and internationally throughout the year 2023 in categories such as 'news', 'sports', 'environment-living', 'Gaza: Evidence', and 'Earthquake: Hope'.
In the 'Earthquake: Hope' category, Arslan preferred Esra Hacioğlu Karakaya's photograph titled 'Miners'.
Examining the photographs in the 'Gaza: Evidence' category, Arslan opted for Mustafa Hassona's photograph titled 'Dust and Smoke'.
Arslan voted for Gerald Andersen's 'Among the Trash' in the 'Environment-Living' category and David Peinado's 'Against the River' in the 'News' category.
Arslan expressed the significance of the achievements of the Turkish National Women's Volleyball Team in the previous year, stating that they were very important. In the 'Sports' category, he chose Dursun Aydemir's photograph titled 'Sultans of the World'.
Arslan remarked that 2023 was a challenging year, and this was reflected in the photographs, saying:
"2023 was a year full of disasters. It began with an earthquake, followed by the war in Ukraine and continued with the situation in Gaza. It was a year where everyone in the world seemed to be indifferent to wars and disasters. In that sense, these photographs tell a lot. It's very difficult to make a choice among them, but the importance of the photograph is very great in ensuring everyone's awareness. Especially, if you remember, the photograph of a child washed ashore in the Aegean stayed in people's memories for a long time and created awareness about migration. It's very important for what you are doing to continue and for these efforts to be enriched in this regard."
